About JJ Trout

Leadership, Inside and Out

I am an outdoor adventurer and values-driven leader. For nearly two decades, I have worked at the intersection of purpose, people, and systems — serving in public office, working as an executive within the outdoor industry and nonprofit sector, and supporting leaders navigating moments of expansion and inflection.

I have served on domestic and global boards advancing sustainability and climate action, suicide prevention, and nonprofit leadership. Across these roles, one truth has remained consistent: Leadership begins within.

How I Work

Grounded in science and shaped by deep inner work, I integrate embodied leadership practices with strategic clarity to support sustainable, values-aligned growth.

My academic background includes training in psychology and a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences. I am completing a Mastery Methods Coaching certification and have trained in trauma-aware somatic practices, Wilderness First Response, and the Hawaiian healing tradition of Lomi Lomi.

But credentials are only part of the story. My approach is rooted in:

  • Playful curiosity

  • Reverence for all life

  • Energetic movement

  • Deep connection

I believe leaders grow best when they feel both challenged and supported — when insight translates into action.

Why Golden Trout Rising

Golden Trout Rising was born from a passion to change systems, an understanding that systems are kept in place by the daily choices of our leaders, and an observation that many capable leaders stall not because they lack intelligence or drive — but because they lack alignment.

When your internal compass is clear, your strategy becomes steady, and change that is good for life ripples naturally. That's where the work begins.

The name reflects that steady movement — rising not through force, but through clarity, timing, and strength.

What You Can Expect

Working with me is structured, thoughtful, and direct. I do not believe in performative leadership. I believe in leadership that reflects who you truly are.

I will:

  • Ask honest questions

  • See your wholeness

  • Reflect patterns you may not see

  • Guide you into translate insight into action

  • Support you in building leadership that feels grounded and sustainable

I will not:

  • Prescribe solutions for you

  • Override your own knowing

  • Promise quick fixes

  • Separate the person from the problem

  • Project my values onto your vision

Outside of Work

You’ll often find me outside — coaching girls on mountain bike trails, near water, or moving in ways that reconnect me to perspective. Adventure reminds me that growth is rarely linear, and that steady movement matters more than speed.

That same spirit shapes my work.
